Game Recap

On a night when both teams pushed the ball, CCS came out on top of Polk County in a shootout 89-64. In front of a large crowd in the first game of the CCS Thanksgiving Tournament, CCS jumped out to a 26-13 lead at the end of the first quarter, extended the lead to 18 at halftime, withstood a Polk County run in the third quarter, and effectively put the game away in the fourth.

The Chargers found themselves in a 4-0 hole at the beginning of the game due to a technical foul assessed during warmups, but it was all Chargers after that. John Rhodes led the way with 11 of his team high 20 points in the first quarter, while Amos Davenport returned from an injury to hit a 3 pointer on his first shot of the season. Jesse Spencer hit two 3’s in the second quarter and Grant Van Meter made one of his own in the second quarter as the Chargers extended their lead.

At halftime, Polk County made an adjustment and put the ball in the hands of Josh Laughlin, who helped pull the Wildcats within 12 in the 3rd quarter. However, the hot shooting of Grant Van Meter continued in the 3rd quarter as he hit two more 3’s and Michael Houge scored 8 points. The Chargers pulled away in the fourth quarter with Cheese Scott, Tink Scott, and Riley Schuster all scoring baskets at the end of the game.

John Rhodes led the Chargers with 20 points, while Michael Houge and Grant Van Meter chipped in 17 and 15 points respectively. Mondo Ellison and Jesse Spencer both just missed double digits with 8 points each. The 89 points scored by the Chargers are the most in the past two seasons. With the win the Chargers are now 2-0 on the season and will take on former district foe Lookout Valley on Friday at 5:30
